Protection
Will a shelter survive a direct missile strike?
No. A precision missile or bunker-busting bomb aimed at a private shelter will destroy it. Even deeply buried national facilities have been damaged this way. Qilyx shelters are designed for what harms most people: fallout, blast at a distance, debris, toxic air and weeks without services. Keeping the shelter secret is part of the protection.
How much radiation does a shelter block?
Our design targets are protection factors from 1,000 (Haven) to 10,000 or more (Estate). A protection factor of 1,000 means people inside receive one thousandth of the dose outside. You can try the shielding calculator.
How thick are the walls?
Reinforced concrete walls from 300 mm to 600 mm and more, roofs from 400 mm to 750 mm and more, under 1 to 3 metres of compacted earth. Final figures are set by our structural engineer for your site.
How deep is the shelter?
The roof usually sits 1 to 3 metres below ground, so the floor is typically 4 to 7 metres down, depending on class, soil and water table.
Does it protect against chemical and biological attacks?
Yes, through gas-tight construction, NBC filtration with HEPA and activated carbon, positive internal pressure and a decontamination zone at the entry. Filters must be replaced on schedule.
What standards do shelters follow?
India has no dedicated standard for private shelters. We design to Indian codes including IS 456, IS 1893 and IS 4991 and the National Building Code, and benchmark performance against Switzerland's TWK 2017 shelter guidelines. Filters are classified under EN 1822. See what the world follows.
What about earthquakes and the monsoon?
Structures are designed to IS 1893 for your seismic zone. Waterproofing is multi-layered with sumps, twin pumps and backflow valves. We test groundwater before design and will advise against a site that floods badly.
Building one
Is it legal to build a bunker in India?
Yes. A private underground structure on your own land is generally allowed, subject to local building bye-laws and approvals for excavation. Rules vary by state and city. We prepare the approvals and tell you exactly what is disclosed. See our guide: is it legal to build a bunker in India?
Does the shelter have to be under a house?
No. Many shelters are standalone: on open land, beneath a garden, within an estate or at a commercial site, with a concealed entrance. We choose the location for speed of access, ground conditions and discretion.
Can you build in a remote place, like a Himalayan valley?
Yes, where the land can be held lawfully and the ground is safe. Land laws in Uttarakhand and Himachal restrict purchases by outsiders, slopes and floods need careful study, and access must work in monsoon and snow. A helipad is possible with DGCA approval, but civil flights can be stopped in a crisis, so retreats are planned for leaving early by road. See retreat shelters.
Can a remote shelter be completely untraceable?
No, and anyone who promises that is not being straight with you. Land records, building approvals and heliport licences are held by the authorities. We keep the location confidential from the public through NDAs, split crews and an ordinary-looking finish.
Do you sell prefabricated bunkers?
No. We only build custom shelters in reinforced concrete. Prefabricated steel units corrode in wet Indian soils, are hard to conceal and are designed for one climate.
How much does a shelter cost?
Every shelter is custom, so cost depends on size, autonomy, protection level and ground conditions. We give you a fixed, written quotation after a site assessment. See what shapes the cost.
How long does it take to build?
Between 4 and 24 months after approval, depending on class, soil and access. Design and approvals usually add 2 to 4 months before that.
Can you build one for an apartment?
Not for an individual flat. For housing societies and developers we design shared community shelters, with agreement from the society or builder.
Where in India do you work?
Anywhere the site and approvals allow. Most enquiries come from Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the hill states.
Living inside
How long can people stay inside?
14 days (Haven), 30 days (Keep), 90 days (Citadel) or 180 days and more (Estate), fully sealed with stored water, food, power and filtration for everyone.
Do you respect vegetarian, Jain and other diets?
Yes. Vegetarian, non-vegetarian, eggetarian, Jain, vegan, satvik and halal stores are planned with you and kept in separate, labelled storage with separate utensils. See food stores.
Won't it get too hot?
It would without cooling. Every shelter has filtered cooling and dehumidification sized for full occupancy and run from backup power.
What if the power fails?
Batteries take over instantly, backed by solar and a generator. If everything fails, the air system has a hand crank.
Privacy and aftercare
Who will know where the shelter is?
You, and a small number of named people on our team bound by NDA. Crews are split so each sees only its part. Some drawings must go to local authorities for approval, and we explain exactly what is shared. See discretion.
Do you need my address to enquire?
No. We ask for your state only, and ask for the site address after an NDA is signed.
Will you come and help during an emergency?
No company can honestly promise that. During an attack, travel may be impossible. We make sure your shelter and your people are ready beforehand, and inspect and restock afterwards when it is safe. See the emergency plan.
What does maintenance involve?
Seasonal visits timed to summer and the monsoon, pressure and filter tests, battery, pump and generator checks, rotation of water, food and medicines, and guided drills. Plans range from one visit a year to quarterly visits with remote monitoring. See maintenance plans.
Can you maintain or audit a shelter someone else built?
Yes. We inspect and test existing bunkers, basements, safe rooms and imported steel units, give you an honest report of what protection they offer, and can upgrade and maintain them.
What happens if I sell the property?
The shelter stays with the property. On your instruction we hand drawings to the new owner, re-key the access codes and transfer maintenance.
